Sri Lanka Navy has taken into custody a local multi-day fishing trawler along with five individuals for allegedly transporting narcotics in the southern seas, Navy sources said.

During the operation, Navy personnel recovered 11 sacks containing suspected Ice (crystal methamphetamine) and heroin from the trawler. The interception took place in deep waters south of Sri Lanka.

The seized fishing vessel was brought to the Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour this morning (24) for further investigations and legal action. Authorities have not yet calculated the total quantity or the estimated street value of the narcotics recovered.

Initial investigations have revealed that the trawler had departed from the Gandara area, reportedly for fishing activities.

The suspects, along with the seized drugs and the fishing vessel, have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigations.
