Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has questioned the conduct of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), alleging that the police leadership is failing to protect officers who come under attack by government MPs.
Speaking to the media, Rajapaksa referred to an incident in which National People’s Power (NPP) Ratnapura District MP Shantha Padmakumara is accused of assaulting a police officer. He said such incidents have created fear among police officers and discouraged them from carrying out their duties independently.
Rajapaksa claimed that police officers who raided a cannabis plantation allegedly linked to a government MP have faced harassment, including the transfer of one officer involved in the raid. He further alleged that another officer was later attacked on the road by the same MP.
He also accused the government of interfering in investigations, claiming that police officers probing a car accident involving former Speaker Ashoka Ranwala were transferred without completing a formal investigation.
The SLPP MP said the actions of the current government reflect a breakdown in law and order and criticised the IGP for remaining silent, alleging that he is acting under political influence rather than upholding the independence of the police service.
