Urgent relief and recovery measures for residents displaced and affected by Cyclone Ditwah were reviewed at a special session of the Mullaittivu District Coordination Committee held yesterday at the District Secretariat.
The meeting was chaired by Deputy Minister of Cooperative Development, Upali Samarasinghe, under the patronage of Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala. The session was convened following instructions from President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to accelerate assistance to disaster-affected communities.
Discussions focused on the rapid restoration of collapsed roads and bridges, compensation for the farming community, and the ongoing distribution of financial aid of Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 25,000 to displaced families. Ministers instructed officials to expedite payments, complete reconstruction work promptly, and facilitate cultivation of lands that remain usable.
Officials were also directed to identify suitable sites for permanent housing for displaced Sinhala, Tamil, and Muslim families involved in the fishing industry and provide equipment to resume fishing activities.
In parallel, compensation payments were distributed to farmers whose agricultural lands were damaged by the cyclone, with ministers overseeing the process.
