The inaugural 2026 budget proposal of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), which is controlled by the ruling National People’s Power (NPP), was defeated today by a narrow margin of three votes.

According to an Ada Derana reporter, the budget received 57 votes in favour, while 60 councillors voted against it during the council session.

The outcome of the vote was decisively influenced by the votes of two members representing the ‘Sarvajana Balaya,’ whose opposition tipped the balance against the NPP-led administration.

The defeat of the budget marks a significant setback for the ruling NPP within the Colombo Municipal Council, highlighting divisions within the council and posing challenges for the administration in securing support for its policy and financial agenda going forward.
