Sri Lanka and Poland have signed a bilateral agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons between the two countries, strengthening cooperation in criminal justice and human rights.
The agreement was signed in Colombo by Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe, PC, on behalf of Sri Lanka, and Przemyslaw Domagala, Deputy Director of Poland’s Department of International Cooperation and Human Rights.
The agreement aims to establish and reinforce the legal framework governing the transfer of convicted persons, ensuring the safe, orderly and humane return of prisoners to their home countries. Under this framework, individuals deprived of their liberty as a result of criminal convictions will be able to serve their sentences in their respective countries of nationality.
Sri Lanka has already entered into Prisoner Transfer Agreements with several countries, including the United Kingdom, India, Kuwait, Maldives, Pakistan, Russia, Ukraine, Viet Nam, Iran, Thailand, the Czech Republic and Latvia.
