The Irrigation Department says that 36 out of the country’s 73 major reservoirs are currently spilling due to increased water levels.
In addition, around 52 medium-scale reservoirs are also continuing to overflow, according to Director of Hydrology and Disaster Management Engineer L.S. Sooriyabandara.
He emphasized that there is no flood situation at present, nor is there any uncontrolled release of water that could lead to flooding. Therefore, the public should not create unnecessary fear or panic, he said.
However, Engineer Sooriyabandara noted that river water levels could change depending on upcoming monsoon rainfall patterns. Accordingly, he urged the public and relevant authorities to remain attentive and monitor the situation closely in the coming days.
