The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has requested the temporary freezing of its inactive bank account, as the party is currently not being recognized by the Election Commission, SLFP General Secretary and Member of Parliament Dayasiri Jayasekara said.

Addressing a media briefing in Colombo, MP Jayasekara said a written request has been submitted to the Suduwella branch of the People’s Bank to temporarily freeze the SLFP bank account. He explained that the move was taken in view of the party’s ongoing legal challenges.

He said that the SLFP is facing several lawsuits, which have prevented the party from contesting elections for several years. If the legal issues continue unresolved, he warned, the party risks becoming further distanced from the people.

MP Jayasekara further alleged that a group which has forcibly occupied the SLFP headquarters is misusing party funds, causing serious harm to party members. He urged all SLFP members to remain vigilant regarding the misuse of party resources.

He also said that several individuals are illegally misappropriating SLFP funds and emphasized that legal action will be taken against those responsible. The MP added that the law will be strictly enforced against individuals who sign cheques to withdraw money from the SLFP’s bank account in the future.
