A major overhaul of services at the Werahera office of the Department of Motor Traffic is set to take place following an inspection by Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Ratnayake on December 18, 2025.
During the visit, the Minister announced that a new Motor Transport digital system (DMT System) will be made mandatory by April 30, 2026, as part of efforts to modernise operations and improve efficiency. He further stated that services will be provided strictly on an appointment-only basis from February 28, 2026, after informing the public in advance.
To ease congestion and improve public access, instructions were also given to urgently introduce a queue management system and to display name boards in all three languages near the main entrance of the office.
Addressing long-standing delays, the Minister directed officials to fast-track the printing of driving licences currently in backlog and to immediately provide required facilities and resources for volunteers assisting the public. Special arrangements are also to be introduced at the Werahera office for applicants facing difficulties in obtaining driving licences through the standard procedures of the National Transport Medical Institute.
In addition, legal measures are to be prepared to extend the first renewal period of driving licences up to the age of 35, along with an assessment of the potential impact of the move on government revenue.
Representatives of the Ministry of Digital Economy, the Ministry of Transport, the Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic, and several senior officials participated in the inspection and discussions.
