Addressing the House during the debate on the current disaster situation, the Deputy Minister also announced that steps have been taken to recommence train services to Talaimannar from February 1, 2026.
Dr. Gunasena said the Central Province has been severely affected by the recent natural disasters triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, with significant impacts on transport infrastructure under the purview of the Transport and Highways Ministry. He noted that major and minor roads, bridges, and railway lines have sustained extensive damage.
According to the Deputy Minister, approximately 1,450 A and B grade roads across the country have been damaged as a result of the adverse weather conditions. He added that restoration work is underway to ensure the safe and timely resumption of transport services nationwide.
