Authorities have issued a flood alert for low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River following heavy rainfall in the river’s catchment areas, warning that flood conditions could develop over the next 48 hours.

The advisory from the Irrigation Department identifies the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Kinniya, Muttur, Kantale, Seruvila, Welikanda, Lankapura, Thamankaduwa, and Dimbulagala as being particularly at risk.

Officials also highlighted the potential inundation of key roads, including the Batticaloa–Polonnaruwa Road in the Gallella area and the access road to the Somawathiya Raja Maha Vihara. Devotees planning to visit the temple have been strongly advised to postpone their travel until further notice.

Residents living near the Mahaweli River have been urged to remain vigilant, take precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property, and follow instructions from local authorities.

Disaster management agencies have been called upon to monitor the situation closely and take immediate action where necessary to mitigate risks.
