Engineer in Charge of the Moragahakanda Project, P. S. Bandara, reported that as of 2 PM on 18 December, the reservoir stood at 184.80 meters, reaching 98.92% of its total capacity. Rising inflows from surrounding catchment areas and potential overflow from the Bowathenna Reservoir have increased concerns about water discharge into downstream rivers.
“If water levels continue to rise, opening the spill gates may become necessary,” Engineer Bandara said. The released water flows into the Amban River, a tributary of the Mahaweli River, which could cause river levels to rise significantly and impact nearby communities.
Residents are being advised to monitor river levels closely and take precautionary measures. Updates on reservoir status, spill gate operations, and water discharge will be shared through the ‘DDMC-Polonnaruwa’ WhatsApp group to ensure timely communication.
Engineer Bandara emphasized that public awareness campaigns will be conducted before any spill gate operation to help minimize potential risks and ensure community safety.
