Heavy rainfall across Sri Lanka has caused a significant increase in water levels in the country’s central reservoirs, prompting authorities to open spill gates to manage the flow.

Early this morning, six spill gates at the Victoria Reservoir were automatically opened, releasing water into the Mahaweli River. Shortly after, two spill gates at the Randenigala Reservoir were also opened, sending water downstream to the Rantambe Reservoir, which has now begun spilling as well.

The Mahaweli Authority has warned that water levels in the Mahaweli River could rise considerably due to these releases. Residents and communities living downstream of Rantambe have been urged to remain vigilant and exercise caution.
