Two significant structures at the ancient Mihintale Viharaya are at risk of collapse following recent heavy rainfall, raising urgent concerns about the preservation of this historic site.
The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has identified the centuries-old Giribanna Stupa and the newly built Dharmashala as particularly vulnerable. Mrs. Deepani Weerakoon, Director General of GSMB, emphasized the urgency of protective measures to prevent irreversible damage.
An excavation engineer from GSMB’s Anuradhapura office, who inspected the site, highlighted that the Dharmashala, constructed without a proper foundation, requires immediate structural reinforcement. A side wall has been recommended to stabilize the building and mitigate further subsidence.
Mrs. Weerakoon also warned that the ancient stupa may develop cracks or weaken structurally if preventive actions are delayed.
The Bureau noted that a comprehensive study is underway, with a geologist being prepared to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the best measures for protecting both the historic stupa and the modern structure.
Authorities are calling for swift intervention to safeguard Mihintale’s cultural heritage while ensuring visitor safety.
