The accident occurred on 11 December 2025, when a jeep driven by Ranwala collided with a motorcycle and a car near Denimulla Junction in Sapugaskanda. A 25-year-old woman, her approximately six-month-old infant, and a 55-year-old elderly woman who were travelling in the car sustained injuries. Ranwala was also injured in the accident and received treatment at hospital.
An investigation led by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Traffic Division, acting on the IGP’s instructions, revealed that officers at the Sapugaskanda Police Station, including the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) and the Traffic OIC, failed to properly carry out their duties. Senior officers responsible for supervising the station were also found to have neglected their responsibilities.
The investigation concluded that these lapses amounted to dereliction of duty. In response, the IGP has instructed the Police Special Investigation Unit to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the conduct of the officers involved and take appropriate disciplinary measures.
