In a strong move to protect Sri Lanka’s wildlife, Hikkaduwa National Park officers arrested a 44-year-old man in the Kaluwamodara area of Aluthgama today (16) for illegally keeping a baby crocodile, officials confirmed.
The suspect appeared before the Kalutara Magistrate, who fined him Rs. 70,000 and instructed the Attidiya Wildlife Veterinarian to release the crocodile into a suitable habitat, followed by a detailed report on its wellbeing.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over the illegal trade of baby crocodiles, with some individuals reportedly exploiting these protected reptiles to attract foreign tourists. Wildlife authorities have stepped up patrols and raids to curb this illegal practice and safeguard the country’s natural heritage.
The successful operation was carried out under the guidance of the Hikkaduwa National Park Warden by a team of wildlife officers, rangers, and field assistants, including G.W.T. Priyankara, L.H.R. Kumara, G.H.L.C. Jayasekara, T.H.C. Dimuthu Kumara, N.K.V.M. Rajika Priyangani, A.P. Nalin Hemantha, and driver Saman Gurusinghe.
