Wildlife officers from the Panama Range Office arrested the owner of a tourist hotel in the Radella area during a raid conducted for illegally keeping protected wildlife.

During the operation, officers discovered an owl, 10 pairs of deer antlers, and 10 tusks being kept inside a cage at the hotel premises. Investigations are also underway into allegations that two eagles and a rusty-spotted cat cub were being kept at the same location.

The suspect, along with the seized items, is due to be produced before the Pottuvil Magistrate’s Court today (17).

The Department of Wildlife Conservation stated that the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance strictly prohibits the possession, transport, or exhibition of protected wildlife species. The department further noted that wildlife officers will continue conducting raids to ensure that animals are allowed to live freely in their natural habitats.
