Prison officers fired warning shots into the air after two remand inmates attempted to escape from the Galle Prison, the Department of Prisons said.
According to officials, the inmates were startled by the gunfire and immediately returned to the prison premises, preventing the escape attempt.
The Department of Prisons confirmed that both inmates sustained minor injuries during the incident and are scheduled to be produced before the prison medical officer for treatment.
Further investigations into the attempted escape are currently underway.
