Minister and Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced that Sri Lanka is set to significantly upgrade its meteorological capabilities through the installation of a state-of-the-art Doppler radar system.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing, Dr. Jayatissa stated that the first Doppler radar is expected to become operational by 2027, marking a major advancement in the country’s capacity to accurately predict severe weather conditions.

He noted that steps are underway to further strengthen the Department of Meteorology by providing essential modern equipment to enhance forecasting accuracy and early warning systems.

Dr. Jayatissa also revealed plans to acquire a second Doppler radar with assistance from the Government of Japan. He emphasized that the installation of two radar systems would enable more precise and reliable weather reporting across the island.

Highlighting the broader impact of the initiative, the Minister stressed that the project extends beyond weather forecasting. He said the improved technology will play a crucial role in saving lives during major natural disasters by enabling faster, more effective state responses and evacuation procedures.

The Doppler radar upgrade is expected to significantly enhance Sri Lanka’s disaster preparedness and resilience against extreme weather events.
