The Japanese government has decided to provide an emergency grant of USD 2.5 million to Sri Lanka following the widespread destruction caused by a cyclone that struck the country, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi announced.

The funds will be channeled through international humanitarian organizations to deliver emergency assistance, including food supplies and other essential daily necessities, to affected communities.

According to authorities, more than 600 people lost their lives due to landslides and floods triggered by the cyclone, causing extensive damage and large-scale displacement across the island.

Addressing a media briefing, Minister Motegi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s rapid recovery and reconstruction efforts, stating that Japan would continue to provide “uninterrupted assistance to our long-standing friend, Sri Lanka.”

He also noted that a Japanese disaster relief medical team returned to Japan earlier on Tuesday after completing its mission in Sri Lanka, during which it provided approximately 1,250 medical treatments over a two-week period.
