The Ministry stated that the highest number of affected children has been reported from the Badulla District, with 21 cases confirmed so far. In addition, information regarding 20 children has been reported from the Kandy District. A significant number of similar cases have also been recorded from the Kegalle and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Meanwhile, the Police have launched investigations into attempts to obtain information about children who have become vulnerable following the deaths of their parents due to the disaster. The Police Media Division noted that certain individuals have been publicizing telephone numbers on social media platforms claiming to collect details about such children.
Police emphasized that legal action will be taken against those identified as engaging in such activities. Authorities further clarified that any person who genuinely wishes to care for or adopt affected children must follow the existing legal framework in Sri Lanka by initiating proceedings at the District Court, in accordance with prevailing general law.
Officials urge the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious attempts to exploit children affected by the disaster.
