The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has taken legal action against two business establishments in the Eldeniya area of Kadawatha for selling float-operated valves without complying with mandatory standards regulations.
According to the CAA, the businesses were found selling float-operated valves that did not display the required registration number of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLS), thereby misleading consumers.
The case was heard before the Mahara Magistrate’s Court on December 15, 2025.
In one instance, a hardware store pleaded guilty to selling and displaying valves without the SLS registration number, in violation of labelling regulations. The court imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000 on the company.
In a separate case, another business was charged with deceiving consumers by using the official logo of the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) without authorisation. The accused company was released on personal bail of Rs. 100,000. The case will be taken up again in January 2026.
As part of the ruling, the court ordered the destruction of seized float-operated valves valued at approximately Rs. 5 million, which were found to be in violation of labelling requirements.
The CAA urged consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing household fittings and to avoid low-quality products that lack proper certification. Officials warned that substandard valves can fail quickly, leading to water leaks, higher water bills, and the wastage of treated drinking water, which poses a broader national concern.
