The draft National Electricity Policy, prepared in accordance with the Sri Lanka Electricity Act No. 14 of 2025, has been officially handed over to Minister of Energy Engineer Kumara Jayakody by the committee appointed for the task.

The policy has been formulated in line with the National People’s Power (NPP) Government’s vision to develop a comprehensive National Energy Policy aimed at addressing both current and future challenges in Sri Lanka’s energy sector. The National Electricity Policy is expected to form a key component of this broader energy framework.

The draft was prepared by a committee appointed by the Cabinet on the recommendation of the Minister of Energy. Following its completion, the committee formally presented the draft policy to the Minister.

The committee comprised Professor Mohan Munasinghe, Professor Arulampalam Attupudaraja, Professor Wijendra Bandara, Dr. M. M. Gunathilaka, Engineer W. J. L. Savindranath Fernando, and President’s Counsel Milinda Gunathilaka.

According to the Ministry, the draft National Electricity Policy will next be opened for public comments. After incorporating feedback from stakeholders and the public, it is scheduled to be finalized and adopted as the official National Electricity Policy of Sri Lanka.
