A police sergeant has been suspended over alleged improper contact with Nanda Kumar Takshi, a suspect remanded for 90 days in connection with the shooting of organised criminal Ganemulla Sanjeewa inside the Aluthkade court complex.
Police said the sergeant allegedly maintained close contact with the suspect, including sharing a biscuit and communicating through hand signals while on duty.
Ganemulla Sanjeewa was shot dead at the Aluthkade court on February 19. Following the incident, the main suspect, Ishara Sewwandi, went into hiding. She was later arrested along with Nanda Kumar Takshi—who closely resembles her—and six other suspects in Kathmandu, Nepal, before being brought back to Sri Lanka.
Both Ishara Sewwandi and Nanda Kumar Takshi are currently detained at the Colombo Crimes Division under 90-day detention orders.
According to police, the suspended sergeant was on duty from 10 p.m. on the 30th to 6 a.m. the following day. During this time, he allegedly offered biscuits to Takshi, who was held in cell No. 03, and received a partially eaten piece in return. CCTV footage reportedly shows the suspect moving closer to the cell and communicating with the officer through hand signals multiple times.
