A police sergeant attached to the Welipenna Police died after being struck by a motorcycle on the Aluthgama–Matugama road, police said.

The deceased was identified as 54-year-old Upul Samantha, a resident of Ahungalla.

The incident occurred last night (15) near the Labuwelgoda junction, where a group of police officers travelling in a jeep were on duty. Police said officers had ordered a motorcycle travelling at high speed to stop, but the rider lost control and struck the sergeant.

The impact reportedly threw the officer into a nearby drain, causing severe head injuries. He was admitted to the Aluthgama Darga Town Hospital but was pronounced dead on admission.

The motorcyclist sustained minor injuries and was admitted to the Aluthgama Hospital before being transferred to the Kalutara Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

Welipenna Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
