Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya today announced plans to expand scholarship opportunities and transform Sri Lanka’s education system from 2026, emphasising the need to develop well-rounded and highly skilled human resources.
Speaking at a ceremony held at Temple Trees to recognise top Western Province performers at the 2023/2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination, the Prime Minister said scholarships will be awarded to students who obtain the highest marks in each A/L subject stream, enabling them to pursue higher studies at foreign universities of their choice.
She encouraged eligible students to apply, stressing that human resource development is essential for the country’s future in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. According to the Prime Minister, education reforms planned from 2026 aim to move beyond exam-oriented learning to produce individuals with diverse competencies, critical thinking skills and global awareness.
Dr. Amarasuriya reiterated that the government is committed to taking all necessary measures to align education policy with national development goals, while ensuring that public funds such as the President’s Fund are used effectively to support students.
The event was attended by senior officials from the President’s Office, the University Grants Commission, provincial authorities and education administrators.
