More than 640 schools across the Central, Uva and North-Western provinces will remain closed tomorrow due to transport and accessibility issues, the Ministry of Education announced today.

Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Nalaka Kaluwewa said 524 schools in the Uva Province alone will not reopen, following assessments by zonal and provincial education authorities. The affected schools are located in the Mahiyanganaya, Bibila, Passara, Badulla, Viyaluwa, Welimada and Bandarawela education zones.

He added that a further 111 schools in the Central Province and five schools in the North-Western Province will also remain closed.

Meanwhile, schools in the Western, Southern, Northern, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa and North-Central provinces will reopen tomorrow as scheduled.

The Secretary said decisions on school operations were made at provincial and zonal levels, taking into account prevailing transport difficulties and access constraints in the affected areas.
