The World Bank Group has expressed deep sorrow over the widespread devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka, while commending the resilience of the Sri Lankan people and the swift actions taken by the government to save lives and initiate recovery efforts.

In a statement, the World Bank Group announced that, following a request from the Government of Sri Lanka, it will provide US$120 million in emergency financial assistance. The funds will be made available through the redeployment of resources from ongoing World Bank–supported projects.

This emergency assistance will be directed toward restoring essential services and critical infrastructure in the worst-affected areas, including health services, water supply, education, agriculture, and connectivity.

Meanwhile, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, said it will continue to support Sri Lanka’s private sector through advisory services and strategic investments in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and logistics, with the aim of creating employment opportunities and accelerating economic recovery.
