He stated that three out of nine major reservoirs in the Ampara District, all major reservoirs in the Anuradhapura District, three out of seven in the Badulla District, and three out of four in the Batticaloa District are presently spilling.
In addition, four out of ten major reservoirs in the Hambantota District, two out of three in the Kandy District, four out of ten in the Kurunegala District, and one out of three in the Moneragala District have their spill gates open.
Furthermore, two out of four major reservoirs in the Polonnaruwa District, three out of five in the Trincomalee District, and one out of four in the Mannar District are also spilling.
The Director of Water Management noted that the volumes of water currently being released through spill gates are being kept at minimal levels. However, he warned that the discharge volumes may be adjusted depending on future rainfall.
He emphasized that residents living in downstream areas of these reservoirs should pay close attention to official notifications regarding water releases. At present, the released water has not caused flooding or a rise in water levels in downstream areas, he added.
