A Sri Lankan air passenger was arrested by officers of the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau at Katunayake Airport in the early hours of December 13 while attempting to illegally bring a stock of foreign-made whiskey into the country.

Police said the suspect, a 28-year-old businessman residing in Minuwangoda, had arrived from Dubai on Emirates Airlines flight EK-648 at around 12.30 a.m.

During inspection, officers recovered 69 bottles of whiskey concealed in his luggage. The total value of the seized liquor is estimated at Rs. 800,000.

The suspect was later released on police bail and is scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on December 15. Further investigations are underway.
