The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has identified landslide-prone areas in 14 districts across the country following the impact of Cyclone Ditwah.
Speaking at a press conference, NBRO Senior Geologist Dr. Wasantha Senadheera said that nearly 30 per cent of the country’s total land area has now been classified as susceptible to landslides.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology announced that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in six provinces, including the Northern Province, over the next 36 hours due to the prevailing northeast monsoon conditions.
In light of the continuing rains, spill gates of several reservoirs across the island have been opened. Accordingly, two spill gates of Kala Wewa have been opened by two feet each, releasing approximately 2,014 cubic feet of water per second into the Kala Oya.
Authorities have urged the public, particularly those living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions issued by relevant agencies.
