The first accused in a case involving threats and extortion against former Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) Chairman Janaka Ratnayake was today (11 December 2025) sentenced to 12 months of rigorous imprisonment.
The sentence was delivered by Additional Magistrate Lahiru N. Silva after the accused pleaded guilty when the case was taken up in open court. The complaint, filed at the Kirulapone Police Station in 2023, alleged that the accused had threatened to kill Ratnayake and intimidated him into paying Rs. 1.5 million.
Advocate Vishwa de Livera Tennakoon appeared for the aggrieved party, while officers of the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) represented the prosecution.
Meanwhile, the trial of the second to eighth accused in the case was scheduled for February 26, 2026.
