The European Union has announced a generous €1.8 million aid package, reaffirming its long-standing partnership and solidarity with Sri Lanka during a period of significant challenges.

Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath extended sincere gratitude to EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka Carmen Moreno and representatives from Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Romania, who were present at the official announcement of the support package.

A portion of the funds will be channelled through the Disaster Response Emergency Fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), enabling rapid assistance for communities affected by recent crises.

In addition to financial aid, the EU is deploying support through its European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operation (ECHO), providing in-kind relief items and sending technical experts to Sri Lanka. These specialists will assess infrastructure damages and contribute to strengthening long-term disaster risk management strategies in the country.
