Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, has attributed the recent flooding in Gampaha town to the unauthorised filling and pollution of the Muthurajawela wetlands.

Speaking at a memorial service held at St. Joseph's Church in Grandpass to honour victims of the recent disaster, the Cardinal urged the government to take immediate action to halt illegal landfills in the ecologically sensitive area.

“We have never seen Gampaha town go under water in the past. This time, the flooding occurred because of the unauthorised filling of Muthurajawela,” he said, stressing the need to protect the wetlands to prevent future disasters.
