The Ministry of Education has announced that schools across the country will reopen on December 16, except for those affected by the recent disaster situation.
The decision follows a comprehensive review of the conditions in each province, Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa said.
Speaking to the media, Kaluwewa stated that schools in the Western, Southern, Northern, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa, and North Central Provinces will resume classes as scheduled.
Of the 10,076 schools in Sri Lanka, 9,929 are expected to reopen, while 147 schools remain closed due to severe damage caused by floods and landslides.
In the Uva Province, 26 schools will remain shut, including five in the Welimada Zone, three in Bandarawela, seven in Badulla, five in Passara, and six in Viyaluwa.
The North Western Province will keep six schools closed—one in the Maho Zone and five in the Ibbagamuwa Zone.
The Central Province, the worst affected, will have 115 schools remaining closed. These include:

15 in Nuwara Eliya
Kaluwewa said an official circular on school reopening will be issued today after assessing the current situation.
He further announced that the second phase of the third school term will run from December 16 to 22, and after the Christmas holidays, classes will resume from December 29 to 31, while Muslim schools will continue until January 2, 2026.
