The Irrigation Department states that 25 reservoirs across the country are to release water due to ongoing rainfall in catchment areas. Director of Irrigation, L. S. Suriya Bandara, said the releases are being managed carefully to prevent any impact on low-lying communities.
The Moragahakanda Reservoir has reached full capacity, though its spill gates remain closed for now. Reservoir engineers confirm that necessary measures are in place to manage water levels without causing harm to the public.
Meanwhile, the recent opening of the Moragahakanda spill gates caused significant damage to the road near the main Moragahakanda Bridge. Authorities report that many people continue to gather in the area to observe and take photographs, creating a potentially dangerous situation.
Security forces urge the public to avoid staying near reservoir surroundings, especially when water levels are at maximum capacity, due to the high risk involved.
