The Sri Lanka Navy celebrates its 75th anniversary today (09), marking a significant milestone in the nation’s maritime defence history.
According to the Navy, a series of social and commemorative programmes have been organised across all Naval Commands, giving priority to naval traditions and religious observances. These activities are being conducted under the guidance and leadership of Navy Commander Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda.

The origins of the Navy date back to the period leading up to World War II, when the rising global tensions underscored the need for a local maritime defence force to ensure harbour security and regional maritime safety. As a result, the Royal Ceylon Volunteer Naval Force was established under the Volunteer Naval Force Protection Ordinance No. 01 of 1937.
Following the end of World War II, the Royal Ceylon Volunteer Naval Force evolved into a regular naval service. Comprising officers and sailors who served actively during the war, the Royal Ceylon Navy was formally established on December 9, 1950, under the Navy Act No. 34 of 1950.
Progressing steadily over the years, the Royal Ceylon Navy was renamed the Sri Lanka Navy in 1972 when the country became a republic.
Marking its proud 75-year journey, the Navy also pays tribute to the brave naval war heroes who made the supreme sacrifice to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
