The United Nations has allocated US$ 4.5 million under its Emergency Response Fund to support those affected by the recent severe weather disaster in Sri Lanka.
UN Resident Representative Mark Andrews officially announced the funding during a meeting with Minister Vijitha Herath today (08), symbolically handing over the commitment to the Minister.
The assistance will prioritize key sectors including food security, housing, drinking water, education, health, agriculture, and fisheries. Andrews also revealed that a five-member OCHA team has arrived in the country to carry out a detailed assessment and will work alongside the Disaster Management Center.
Minister Herath emphasized that long-term international support is essential for the rebuilding process, given the disaster’s broad impact on the population, economy and agriculture. Andrews assured that he will coordinate with UN offices in New York and Geneva to work with donor countries in supporting Sri Lanka’s recovery.
