Sri Lanka cricketer Chamika Karunaratne was granted personal bail of Rs. 1 million on Monday after a woman accused him of fathering her child and refusing to accept responsibility, according to court officials.
The complaint was filed by Sewwandhi Senarathna, an airline pilot, who alleged she had a sexual relationship with Karunaratne that resulted in the birth of a child. She requested the court to order a DNA test to establish paternity.
Karunaratne’s lawyer, Asela Rekawa, opposed the request, saying his client denies the allegation. Rekawa claimed the complainant had also been in a relationship with an Indian national during the same period and submitted a photograph to support the claim. He further argued that the court has no authority to compel a DNA test and stressed that the burden of proof rests on the complainant.
The magistrate released Karunaratne on bail and scheduled the next hearing for January 30, 2026.
