Attanagalla Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne ordered two supermarket owners to pay a fine of Rs. 400,000 for selling local Nadu and Kiri Samba rice at prices higher than the maximum retail price.

The two businessmen, who operate supermarkets in the Kalagedihena area, were found to have sold one kilo of Nadu rice at Rs. 255, despite the regulated price being Rs. 230. The second businessman had sold one kilo of Kiri Samba at Rs. 310, whereas the maximum retail price was Rs. 260.

The investigation was carried out on the instructions of Gampaha District Consumer Affairs Authority after which the suspects were produced before court.
