The National Youth Services Council (NYSC) today (05) launched the first programme under the newly introduced 1 Million Volunteers initiative, carried out under the guidance of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The inaugural community service effort focused on cleaning roads and public areas in Chilaw, which were heavily impacted by the recent floods. Cleanup work was conducted at the Chilaw General Hospital and its surrounding premises, as well as in the Ichchanpitiya and Melpura areas.

The programme was jointly organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, its affiliated sports institutions, the National Youth Services Council (NYSC), the National Youth Corps (NYC), and the Youth Club National Federation.
More than 300 young volunteers participated in the initiative.

According to the Ministry, the 1 Million Volunteers programme aims to build a strong national volunteer network. Registration is now open to young people across the country via an online form.

The event was attended by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage, NYSC Chairman/Director General Supun Wijerathne (Attorney-at-Law), NYC Director Gamini Wickramapala, and senior officials of the ministry.
