Met dept announces that rainfall in several parts of the island is expected to increase on December 9, 10, and 11 with the establishment of the Northeast monsoon. Director General Athula Karunanayake said wind speeds are also likely to strengthen, though fewer thundershowers are expected compared to the inter-monsoonal period.

With monsoon conditions activating over the Northern, North Central, North Western, Eastern, and Uva provinces, showers or thunderstorms may occur at any time, with rainfall of 75–100 mm likely. Cloudy skies will persist in these regions. While thundershowers are not expected elsewhere, the southwest may still experience rain.

Mr.Karunanayake noted that an atmospheric disturbance southeast of Sri Lanka, along with a low-level disturbance near the Andaman Islands, has contributed to strengthening monsoon conditions. Multi-day fishing vessels and the naval community are advised to stay alert to upcoming forecasts.
