The Department of Irrigation said repairs to the Mavil Aru embankment—breached in several locations after Mahaweli floodwaters exceeded capacity—will have to be postponed until the northeast monsoon subsides.
Trincomalee Irrigation Director, Engineer K. Subramaniam, said access to the embankment remains blocked as the access road is still flooded. An on-site inspection will be carried out once the water recedes, after which the full extent of the damage will be assessed.
He added that damage to sections of the Serunuwara Flood Protection Dam at Neelapola and Dehiwatte, as well as the breach of the Suriyapura Flood Protection Dam in Kantale, will also be evaluated as part of the overall assessment.
