Over 150 water supply systems have been rendered inoperable due to the severe weather conditions sweeping across the island, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) said.
The Board operates 343 water supply schemes nationwide, and 156 of these were affected, causing significant disruption to consumers. As of the morning of December 2, 2025, approximately 126 systems have been restored, while around 30 remain out of operation.
Restoration teams from the NWSDB, supported by retired employees, local communities, and the tri-forces, are working tirelessly to bring the remaining systems back online. However, officials caution that full restoration may take several more days due to landslides blocking access roads, damaged pipelines, power outages, flooded intake points, and extensive electrical and mechanical failures.
All water supply systems in the Western Province are currently functioning at maximum capacity. In contrast, more than half of the systems in the Kandy, Puttalam, and Kurunegala districts remain non-operational. Several other districts have systems running below full capacity.
