The Sri Lanka Police have emphasized that strict legal action will be taken against individuals who spread false information on social media during the ongoing disaster situation.
In an official statement, the Police said that firm action will be enforced under the Emergency Gazette as well as existing laws against those who circulate misleading content that could cause public fear and unrest.
They further noted that spreading or creating false information during a disaster can hinder ongoing relief efforts and disrupt essential services provided to affected communities. Therefore, the Police urged the public to share only verified and accurate information, especially during critical times like these.
The Police reiterated that maintaining responsible communication is vital to ensuring the safety and well-being of the public during disaster response operations.
