Five Sri Lanka Navy personnel, including the Officer-in-Charge of the Chalai Naval Sub-unit attached to SLNS Wettalekeni, died after entering the Chalai Lagoon on Friday to cut off water flowing toward the naval sub-unit during worsening flood conditions.

Contact with the team was lost shortly after they entered the area, prompting the immediate launch of a search operation. A special team from the Northern Naval Command was deployed yesterday to intensify efforts.

Despite extensive search operations on land and water, the Navy later confirmed that all five personnel had died during the mission.
