The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has refuted claims circulating on social media alleging that the dams of the Kotmale, Victoria, and Moragahakanda reservoirs have breached.
The DMC confirmed that these reports are completely false and emphasized that no dam failure or structural damage has occurred in any of the reservoirs.
Engineer Nilantha Dhanapala of the Mahaweli Authority’s Water Management Division stated that the Kotmale reservoir has slightly exceeded its spill level, and water is being released in a controlled manner. He urged the public not to panic or fall prey to misinformation.
Meanwhile, Chief Engineer G.D.I. Shantha of the Victoria Hydropower Plant noted that all three generators at the plant are operating normally and that there is no threat or irregularity affecting operations. He further assured that the facility remains in a safe and stable condition.
Authorities request the public to rely on official updates and avoid sharing unverified information during ongoing weather-related challenges.
