Authorities have urged residents in Colombo and surrounding areas to store as much water as possible due to a rising threat to the Ambatale Water Treatment Plant.

According to Minister of Water Supply Susil Ranasinghe, the rapidly increasing water level of the Kelani River has created a significant risk of damage to the facility.

The minister noted that if the river continues to rise, water purification and distribution operations could be disrupted, leading to supply shortages across heavily populated urban zones. Residents are advised to secure adequate water reserves in their homes until further updates are issued.

With severe weather already straining essential services, officials warn that timely preparation will help reduce the impact on households if the situation worsens.
