The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) is urging all eligible donors to step forward as Sri Lanka faces a potential blood shortage due to ongoing adverse weather conditions.
According to the NBTS, numerous mobile blood donation campaigns scheduled across the island have been cancelled as a result of the severe weather. In addition, the number of walk-in donors visiting hospital blood banks has dropped significantly in recent days.
Due to these challenges, hospitals across the country may experience reduced blood supplies in the coming days. The NBTS is therefore appealing to voluntary donors to donate blood at their nearest blood bank to help maintain life-saving reserves.
The public is especially encouraged to visit the National Blood Centre in Narahenpita from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, as well as the following hospitals, which currently have a higher demand for blood:
- Ragama Teaching Hospital
- Maharagama Apeksha Hospital
- Jaffna Hospital
- Kurunegala Hospital
- Anuradhapura Hospital
- Kandy Hospital
- Badulla Hospital
- Hambantota Hospital
- Kalutara Hospital
- Ratnapura Hospital
- Galle National Hospital
Additionally, blood donations can be made at the Matara-Kamburugamuwa Southern Blood Centre from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The NBTS states that its staff are fully prepared and awaiting the support of generous donors during this critical period.
