The Department of Irrigation has issued an urgent evacuation warning as water levels at the Giriulla and Badalgama gauging stations have reached their maximum due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions.

Director of the Hydrology and Disaster Management Unit, Eng. L.S. Suriya Bandara, stated that residents in Divulapitiya, Alawwa, Katana, Meerigama, Pannala, Dankotuwa, Narammala, Negombo, and Wennappuwa are advised to move immediately to safer locations as a high-risk situation has developed with rising water levels.

Reports indicate that rivers and canal systems in the area are rapidly swelling, increasing the likelihood of severe flooding. The Irrigation Department emphasises that taking immediate safety measures is crucial to minimize risk.

Residents are urged to avoid remaining in low-lying flood-prone areas and to stay alert to official warnings issued through mobile alerts and local authorities.
