The Department of Immigration and Emigration has announced special temporary visa relief measures for foreign visitors currently in Sri Lanka, due to the ongoing severe weather conditions and resulting emergency situation.

According to the announcement, the following concessions will be in effect from 28 November 2025 for a period of 7 days:

1. Departure Facilitation for Tourists With Expired Visas

Foreign tourists whose visas have expired and who are unable to leave the country due to flight cancellations or travel disruptions will be allowed to depart through airports without penalty, during the 7-day concession period.

2. Grace Period for Visitors Needing Visa Extensions

Short-term and long-term visa holders already in Sri Lanka, whose visas have expired and who wish to extend their stay, will be granted a 7-day grace period from 28 November 2025 to obtain visa extensions without penalty fees.

3. Online Visa Extension Facility

Short-term tourist visa extensions can be carried out via the Department of Immigration and Emigration’s online portal, allowing visitors to complete the process without visiting the department in person.
